Seton Painting #1
April 16, 2000 |
The Building & Design Committee wanted our church to tell Elizabeth Seton's story. It was decided that this would be done through the media of oil painting to be located in the baptistery area. The following is the explanation of the first painting:
"Daughter - Wife - Mother"
Elizabeth Ann Bayley Seton was born in New York City on August 28, 1774, shortly before our country was founded. Even though she was not a catholic, Elizabeth was destined to become the first, native born American citizen to be canonized a Saint. Her mother died when she was three years old. Her father was a prominent physician and she learned from him to care for the sick and poor. Though her childhood was a difficult one she enjoyed dancing and playing the piano. At the age of 19 she married the love of her life, William Seton. They had five children -- two sons and three daughters. She loved being a wife and mother.
