REDISCOVER CATHOLICISM by Matthew Kelly
Kelly reveals the essence of authentic Catholic spirituality while addressing some of the most important quetions we face today both as individuals and as a church.
Faith for Families
Today’s family faith section focuses on infancy. The first stage of spiritual development, according to James W. Fowler, is Primal Faith (ages 0-2). This is the stage when a child bonds with his family. Attachment to a primary caregiver is essential to all future development. Attachment is a predictor of intelligence. Therefore, it is true that a baby can NOT be spoiled. They learn to trust and regulate when their needs are quickly attended to. Contrary to logic, young children who are held and nurtured when upset are MORE likely to be able to calm themselves and manage emotions as a child. The task of families of infants is to hold, nurture, and respond to their needs. If you have an infant, here are some tips for fostering spiritual development:
*Fall in love with each other.
*Use calm voices in the infant’s presence
*Read, sing, talk, pray with them
*Attend to physical and emotional cues
*Offer objects and strategies to self-soothe (music, pacifier, lovey, etc..)
